First Feature is the first Anthony Carrick mystery. I have enjoyed hard boiled detective fiction for decades. I devoured all of Raymond Chandler’s and Dashiel Hammett’s books and wished that they had written more. From my love for the hard boiled mystery was born my character Anthony Carrick. A rough and tumble, funny tough guy.
Anthony Carrick lives alone in a small apartment in Santa Monica. He’s not really alone as he keeps Pirate his one eyed cat that he rescued from the alley company. Anthony Carrick is an ex LAPD homicide detective who didn’t retire but left under more difficult circumstances. He now ekes out his living by doing private investigations and selling his own paintings at a local LA gallery every so often.
He’s divorced and has a preteen daughter. Like all great hard boiled detectives that have come before him, he drinks too much and smokes too much and has an eye of the ladies. He’s charming and witty with a thirst for justice and a strong moral compass. He’s never backed down from a fight and wins more than he loses.
First Feature finds Anthony Carrick hired by a powerful Hollywood production company to uncover the murder of one Hollywood’s finest producers Max Ernst.
Juggling and fighting drug addled nymphomaniacs, vegan hippies, prostitutes, mafias and Tinsel Town’s dark underbelly, Anthony has to close this murder before the cops do. There is much at stake here, not only the half a billion dollar estate but the uncovering of seedy secrets that the tabloids are hungry for.
All that glitters is not gold in Tinsel Town. The sparkling facade of Hollywood’s fun and success is covering up more sinister aspects of the movie business.
